Women's Place is Moving

It is with sadness that we say good bye to Bridgetown, and with a smile that we return to Cornwallis Park!  38 Queen Street in Bridgetown is going to be renovated into a spectacular library.  This means we have to move on.  Three years ago, we moved from the Cornwallis area, and now we are returning.  We will be located at 86 Atlantic Avenue in Cornwallis Park.  This building is where the Annapolis Digby Economic Development Agency is located.  As you enter Cornwallis Park by the RCMP detachment, turn right, and we will be in the mustard-coloured building on the right.  We look forward to seeing you there!

Women's Place becomes Regional Training Centre for ICAP

The Women's Place Resource Centre has signed a contract with the International Child Assault Prevention Project, which makes us the Regional Training Centre for Nova Scotia.  Wendy Knowlton, the program coordinator for The Women's Place, attended a "train the trainer" program in Sewell, New Jersey in August.  She is now qualified to train interested faciliators to conduct workshops in elementary school programs.

The International Center for Assault Prevention, known as ICAP, is a 30 year old international prevention program with its central headquarters located in Sewell, New Jersey.  ICAP works with local people who desire to advocate and protect children.  Since its inception in 1985, ICAP has trained over 5 million children, parents and teachers to prevent peer assault, stranger abduction and known adult assault. CAP seeks to integrate the best resources of a community in an effort to reduce a child or young person's vulnerability to verbal, physical and sexual assault. CAP projects work closely with the local school districts, parent/teacher associations and home school groups, and other community groups. All CAP curricula have a threefold educational approach to prevention which includes trainings in the following areas: Staff In service, Parent Program and Individual Classroom Workshops for children and teens.

All ICAP curriculum is based on an empowerment philosophy which seeks to reduce children’s vulnerability to assault by increasing awareness that children have human rights and by providing prevention strategies and resources which will help children keep these rights.  We hope to expand this program in Nova Scotia and keep our children safe, strong, and free.

If you would like to be a part of this program, or would like more information, please contact Wendy Knowlton at 638-8566 or womensplace2@ns.aliantzinc.ca.

Book now on Sale

At long last, the book entitled "The Road Here" is complete and on sale.

The Women’s Place Resource Centre, with funding from New Horizons for Seniors, has combined stories from twenty-one senior women from rural areas of Annapolis, Kings and Digby counties.  The women who participated in this project spoke of their work, their contributions to their communities, their efforts to celebrate their cultures, and the journeys travelled in their immigration to Canada.   From women who worked on tanks in the Second World War, to women who established a thriving business, to senior women who lobby government, this book is sure to keep you reading.  Rachel Brighton is the editor and photographer of this book, and she captures the stories of the women and the vibrancy of the struggles and successes each woman shares.

The books are available at The Women’s Place Resource Centre, and can be mailed out upon request.  The cost of the book is $10.95.  Shipping fees are $3.  All proceeds go to the Francis Mills-Clements Bursary Fund, a scholarship fund for women who are continuing their education.  Ms. Mills-Clements shares her story in this book, and inspires the reader with her generosity and compassion.  Please contact The Women’s Place Resource Centre at 638-8566 for a copy.
